A BIS Licence is a certificate of conformity on which the license number of BIS along with the standard mark is imprinted on the product BIS mark. Some of the product categories are required to have the minimum quality and safety standards while selling in India. The BIS certification is mandatory or voluntary for different types of products and is important for the consumer to ensure their quality and to support consumer safety. BIS compliance is mandated under two main schemes – ISI Mark Scheme (for domestic manufacturers) and Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) (for electronics and IT goods). • Penalties Manufacturing or selling goods that require BIS certification without obtaining one can lead to fines up to ₹2 lakh, imprisonment up to 2 years or both under the BIS Act. Misuse of the ISI mark or fake certification can lead to legal prosecution and seizure of goods. Delay in renewal or failure to meet post-certification obligations may result in licence suspension or cancellation.
